Welcome to the West Tennessee Concerns for Police Survivors
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Question: What is COPS?
Answer: Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc., also known as COPS, is a nationwide non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty as determined by Federal government criteria.
WTN-COPS is a sub-chapter of the national organization Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. The West Tennessee Concerns of Police Survivors received its charter in January, 2001 after Mike and Susan Rose of Drummond, Tennessee attended the National Police Week in Washington, DC. They came away committed to begin a chapter in West Tennessee. Mike is the survivor of Richard Rose who was an officer with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office. The West Tennessee Concerns of Police Survivors serves 21 counties with 96 police departments west of the Tennessee River.
- Question: How can WTN-COPS help?
Answer: WTN-COPS responds after all "line-of-duty" deaths to support the surviving families, co-workers, and agencies. WTN-COPS will offer their support as long as needed to ALL survivors. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Help is always just a phone call away.
WTN-COPS provides bereavement and growth groups where we offer and receive emotional support. Members are present at visitations, funerals, and memorial services for fallen officers. Support meetings are held throughout the year for survivors. A strong network of survivors exists which provides peer support and assistance. No one is ever forced to travel the journey of "grief" alone. Our goals are to make the path of those who follow a little less painful, as we reach out to the families of West Tennessee's fallen heroes.
Additionally, COPS offers hands-on programs every year at no cost to survivors, giving each family member an opportunity to be surrounded by other survivors like themselves. WTN-COPS funds the traveling expenses for West Tennessee survivors, so that there are no costs whatsoever to our families. These hands-on programs include:
- COPS Kids Camp (ages 6-14)
- Outward Bound Adventure (ages 15-20)
- Adult Children's Retreat
- Spouses' Getaway
- Parents' Retreat
- Siblings' Retreat
- In-Laws' Retreat
- Question: Where does WTN-COPS get their funding?
Answer: WTN-COPS is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, run by volunteers. All Board members are survivors and they receive no compensation for the services they provide. No stipends or honorariums are accepted by individual presenters. Any donations that are received go to the West Tennessee Concerns of Police Survivors. It was never intended that an individual profit financially or personally because of the contacts made as a result of affiliation with COPS. This is important so that donors know that the funds they give or help to raise are used for the benefit of the survivors.
- Question: Who is considered a "survivor?"
Answer: Survivors include spouses, children, parents, siblings, significant others, and affected co-workers of officers killed in the line of duty according to Federal government criteria.
- Question: Who can I contact to find out more about WTN-COPS?
