FIRST ANNUAL WALK FOR C.O.P.S.

Sheriff Mark Luttrell makes opening comments and gives special regonition to family survivors in honor of fallen law enforcement officers from West TN
At dusk on May 9th, over 150 families, friends and supporters gathered at Patriot Lake in Shelby Farms for the First Annual Walk for Concerns of Police Survivors in memory of the fallen law enforcement officers of west Tennessee.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office co-sponsored the event, which began with the solomn sounds of bagpipes (provided by Gordon Abernathy and his group) and special recognition of family survivors present for the event by Sheriff Mark Luttrell. All participants were given blue glow sticks to use for the walk around the lake as well as refreshments following the walk. The goal for 2009 is to double the number of people in attendance.

Police Memorial Week in Washinton, DC

May 11-15 was Police Memorial Week. On May 13 a candlelight vigil was held at the Police Memorial Wall. Family survivors were taken by bus to the Memorial Services which were held on May 15 on the lawn of the Capitol Building. They were escorted to the services by 236 police motocycles, 18 law enforcement vehicles and 20. C.O.P.S. offered break-out seminar sessions for survivors to discuss like concerns and issues related to the death of a fallen officer as well as finding solutions to their common problems. Special sessions were offered for surviving co-workers, significant others, fiancés, and extended family members as well. Children under the age of 18 participated in the "C.O.P.S. Kids/Teens" Program.

COPS held its first National Police Survivors' Seminars the following year with 100 attendees. There are now over 10,000 families served by COPS. West Tennessee Concerns of Police Survivors (WTN-COPS) was organized in 2000 and is one of the three state chapters.
